Every spring, the valleys of Hunza and Nagar turn into a sea of pink and white as thousands of apricot trees come into blossom. From mid-March to mid-April, terraced villages such as Karimabad, Altit, Ganish, Minapin, Pisan and Hopper glow against the still-snowy peaks of Rakaposhi and Ultar, making blossom season one of the most beautiful times of year to visit Gilgit-Baltistan.
When the blossom comes
The blossom usually begins in the lower villages around Gilgit and Nagar in mid-March and climbs higher through late March and early April. Karimabad and the Hunza Valley are at their best in the last week of March and the first week of April, while cooler spots like Hopper and the upper Nagar villages bloom a few days later. Because the season depends on temperature, exact dates shift a little every year, so plan a stay of at least four or five days to be safe.
Where to see the blossom
The best viewpoints are easy to reach. Walk the old streets of Karimabad up to Baltit Fort for a panorama over blossom-covered terraces, drive to Duikar above Altit for sunrise or sunset, and continue into Nagar to Minapin and Hopper, where apricot orchards sit beneath the Rakaposhi viewpoint. Photographers should aim for early morning and late afternoon, when the light is soft and the white blossom contrasts beautifully with the golden rock and blue sky.
Practical tips: book rooms early, because blossom season is increasingly popular and the best hotels in Karimabad fill up fast. Days are mild but nights are cold, so bring layers, a warm jacket and comfortable walking shoes for village paths. Respect private orchards and fields — admire and photograph from the paths, and ask before entering a family’s garden.
Beyond the blossom
Combine blossom with Hunza’s other highlights: Attabad Lake’s turquoise water, the Hussaini suspension bridge, Passu Cones and a day trip towards the Khunjerab Pass if the road is open. Apricot blossom in Hunza and Nagar is short, gentle and unforgettable — if you can only visit Gilgit-Baltistan once in spring, this is the season to choose.
